A respectful guidance policy rooted in connection
At Little Wonders Academy, we believe behaviour is a form of communication. Children learn best in environments where they feel safe, valued and connected. Our approach supports emotional regulation, social skills, respectful relationships and responsive teaching.
Guidance goals
Support children in expressing emotions in healthy ways. Foster self-regulation, empathy and conflict-resolution skills. Create consistent, respectful environments that nurture children’s well-being and continuity between home and school.
Core principles
Prevention first. Connection before correction. Respectful communication. Learning, not punishment. Inclusive and culturally responsive guidance.
Strategies educators use
Predictable routines, transition warnings, age-appropriate choices, role-play, storybooks, real-life social skill practice, positive encouragement, natural and logical consequences, calming spaces and regulation tools.
When additional support is needed
If a child’s behaviour persists or escalates, educators observe and document patterns, collaborate with families, develop an Individual Support Plan when needed and involve specialists or community supports when appropriate.
Prohibited practices
In accordance with Alberta ELCC regulations, Little Wonders Academy prohibits physical punishment or restraint, verbal abuse, threats or sarcasm, denial of basic needs, isolation or exclusion from the program, shaming, humiliation and degrading language.
Family collaboration
We value open, respectful communication with families. Educators share updates on social-emotional development, discuss strategies being used and encourage consistency between home and school approaches.
Ongoing staff training
Educators receive training in trauma-informed practices, child development and brain science, conflict resolution, positive behaviour guidance, and inclusive, culturally sensitive approaches.
